Intent

Recognize the balance and tradeoffs between production and safety. Manage pressure, distractions and fatigue in an effort to avoid hazards while accomplishing the mission.​

Facilitating the Discussion

  • Show the video.
  • Facilitate a small or large group discussion using the activity and discussion questions.

Discussion Questions

  1. Describe a situation in which your crew was challenged with balancing fireline production and safety? What safety controls were put in place to manage risk?
  2. While on an assignment, what types of pressure to complete the mission have been put on you from an Incident Commander, Division/Group Supervisor, Incident Management Team members, or agency representative? How did the pressure affect your decision making?
  3. What are some distractions that could cause you to lose your focus?
  4. Fatigue is difficult to recognize within yourself. What are some indicators that indicate you are fatigued?
  5. During a long assignment or fire season, complacency will inevitably surface. How do you manage complacency when it strikes?

Wildland Fire Module Unit

The NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Module Operations, PMS 430 standardizes procedures and expectations for Wildland Fire Modules (WFMs). These standards are to be used by staff, supervisors, specialists, and technicians for planning, administering, and conducting WFM operations. These standards will also be used as a measure of WFM qualifications, capabilities, and expected performance, for both Type 1 and Type 2 WFMs.

The NWCG Standards for Airtanker Operations, PMS 514 establishes the standards for dispatching, utilizing, and coordinating airtankers on interagency wildland fires. These standards should be used in conjunction with the NWCG Standards for Aerial Supervision (SAS), PMS 505, NWCG Standards for Airtanker Base Operations (SABO), PMS 508, and any applicable agency plans.
