Mission Statement

The Fuels Management Committee (FMC) provides national leadership to unite the NWCG member agency wildland fuels management programs under the common purpose of reducing risks of wildfire to communities while improving and maintaining ecosystem health.

Body

Primary Objectives

  • Enable coordinated and effective national interagency wildland fuels management.
  • Reduce the risk of negative impacts from wildfire on human populations, natural resources, and other assets.
  • Maintain and restore healthy vegetative communities through management actions and provide for the use of wildland fire as a tool to achieve natural resource objectives.
  • Establish and regularly update wildland fire position and qualification standards related to assigned positions. This includes position descriptions and position requirements for training, experience, physical fitness, and position currency.
  • Contribute to the standardization of information technology systems (such as FireNet, IROC, etc.) to collect and distribute data, processes, forms, and other operational elements.

The updated NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations, PMS 212, and NWCG Position Task Book for Basic Faller (FAL3), PMS 311-19 are now available.

The NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations, PMS 212 includes position standards designed to be used in conjunction with the Next Generation Position Task Book (Next Gen PTB). The Next Gen PTB for Basic Faller (FAL3) includes an evaluation guide with suggested rating elements to consider when assessing trainees.

RMC Memo 25-01: Summary of Updates to Safety Officer Positions

The Risk Management Committee (RMC) serves as the position steward for all Safety Officer incident positions and continues to improve position standards, training, and naming conventions. The implementation of Complex Incident Management (CIM) required changes to position titles. RMC collaborated with the NWCG Incident Position Standards Committee (IPSC) to propose and implement these updates.
