Dozer Typing Standard

*Manufacturer’s published rated net horsepower (HP). Horsepower rating taken at the flywheel with all the engine accessories installed not counting transmission losses or anything after the flywheel.
**Manufacturer’s published base weight for dozer including equipped track width and blade configuration, equipment fluids, etc. If a published base weight is unavailable, a certified in-service weight shall be used.
Base operational weight is only used for typing. Final in-service dozer weight will be higher and include additional accessories such as winch, grapple, forestry package, etc. Final in-service dozer weight must be used when calculating hauler capacity, bridge weight limits, etc.

 


Engines

The NWCG categorizes information on fire apparatus into logical groups and provides common options often requested by fire managers. The Incident Command System (ICS) uses this system based on the equipment capability. The table below shows NWCG minimum performance requirements for structure and, wildland engine resource types. Additional information for required crew training and equipment recommendations can be found at the position catalog.

Notes:

  1. All types shall meet federal, state and agency requirements for motor vehicle safety standards, including all gross vehicle weight ratings when fully loaded.
  2. Type 3 engines and tactical water tenders shall be equipped with a foam proportioner system.
  3. All water tenders and engine types 3 through 6 shall be able to prime and pump water from a 10 foot lift.
  4. Personnel shall meet the qualification requirements of NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications, PMS 310-1.

 Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs)

In the OHV typing standard NWCG categorizes information on OHVs into logical groups and provides important safety requirements for the occupants. The typing is not meant to address all specialized applications such as water handling, ground ignition, or medical support. However, these requirements can be added within the context of the typing by only allowing certain specialized applications to be done on certain OHV types or specifying higher than minimum or additional requirements such as power.

¹ The OHV shall conform to either the American National Standard Institute Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (ANSI/OPEI) or American National Standard Institute Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ANSI/ROHVA) standard in effect at the time of manufacture and shall not have any modifications that cause non-compliance. 
² This NWCG Type is likely the most suitable type for permanently mounted equipment such as pump and tank or ground ignition equipment. 
³ Payload capacity is the total amount of weight that can be loaded on the OHV. Payload includes personnel weight, fixed equipment, and cargo. Personnel weight shall be calculated at 200 lbs. for every seatbelt position, even if unoccupied. Rear box load is included as part of the payload capacity. Payload capacity shall not be exceeded. 
⁴ Rear box load rating shall not be exceeded. 
⁵ The OHV shall have a minimum of one (1) red taillamp that illuminates when the headlamps are on. 
⁶ The OHV shall have a minimum of one (1) red stop lamp or combination taillamp/stop lamp that activates when braking occurs. 
⁷ The OHV shall have an accessory fire extinguisher that is mounted to be accessible. The fire extinguisher mount may be secured to the rollover protective structure (ROPS), exterior to the occupant seating area, using clamps or bands. Drilling or welding to the ROPS is never permitted.

Water Tender Resources

 

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) provides national leadership to enable interoperable wildland fire operations among federal, state, Tribal, territorial, and local partners. NWCG operations standards are interagency by design; they are developed with the intent of universal adoption by the member agencies. However, the decision to adopt and utilize them is made independently by the individual member agencies and communicated through their respective directives systems.

The updated NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations, PMS 212, and NWCG Position Task Book for Basic Faller (FAL3), PMS 311-19 are now available.

The NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Chainsaw Operations, PMS 212 includes position standards designed to be used in conjunction with the Next Generation Position Task Book (Next Gen PTB). The Next Gen PTB for Basic Faller (FAL3) includes an evaluation guide with suggested rating elements to consider when assessing trainees.
