S 190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior 2008 Online Delivery

Online Delivery

This is an NWCG-certified course.  Click here to view the NWCG certification statement for this course. 

This online course (estimate 6-8 hours) provides the foundation to understanding the characteristics and interactions of the wildland fire environment and how those factors influence a fire’s behavior.  The course is designed for entry-level firefighters.  Additional information about the course can be found on the Overview page.

Instructions

  1. Complete online course (instructions below). You will be directed to the National Fire Academy (NFA) Online website. You will need an NFA Online account to take this course; follow directions on the NFA Online website to obtain an account. Search for course title in the catalog and add the online course to your “To-Do-List.” The NFA Online learning management system will track your progress.
  2. There is a challenge review at the end of each module; you must obtain a passing score of 70% or higher on each review. When you successfully complete the review, you will be able to print or PDF a "module" certificate of completion.
  3. When you successfully complete all of the challenge reviews and all modules have tracked complete in the NFA Online and the online component has moved to the "Completed Work" section, you will then be able to print a S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (Online) 2008 certificate of completion for the online course.  Print the NWCG certificate of completion (instructions below). Keep the certificate as proof of successful completion of the course.

1. Confirm the installed Adobe Reader is the current version for the browser you are using.

2. To print the online course completion certificate, log into your NFA Online account. From your Home Page select VIEW ALL in the Completed Work pod.

3. Hover mouse over the title of the course, wait for pop-up, and select PRINT CERTIFICATE.

NWCG Equipment Technology Committee Releases Safety Warning: 24-001 Stihl Chainsaw Toolless Fuel Cap Spill Prevention

The Equipment Technology Committee (ETC) has released Safety Warning: 24-001 Stihl Chainsaw Toolless Fuel Cap Spill Prevention. Misaligned toolless fuel caps on Stihl chainsaws have led to recurring fuel spillage, fuel ignition, and burn injuries during wildland fire management operations.

This Safety Warning is intended to highlight the details and recommended procedures for the installation of a Stihl chainsaw toolless fuel cap, as well as how to identify and correct a misaligned, damaged, or broken fuel cap to help prevent fuel spillage.

NWCG is excited to announce that the NWCG Incident Position Standards for Equipment Time Recorder, PMS 350-51 and NWCG Position Task Book for Equipment Time Recorder (EQTR), PMS 311-51 are now available.

The Performance Support Package, which for EQTR, includes the Incident Position Standards and Next Generation Position Task Book were developed through the Incident Performance and Training Modernization (IPTM) effort. The Performance Support Package will support trainees, those qualified in the position, and evaluators.

NWCG Risk Management Committee Releases Safety Bulletin: 24-001 Use of Respirators on Wildland Fires

The Risk Management Committee (RMC) has released Safety Bulletin: 24-001 Use of Respirators on Wildland Fires. As wildland fire respirators are available through several established vendors, wildland fire personnel need to understand regulations and limitations of respirator use in the workplace.

Safety Bulletin 24-001 outlines the following topics regarding respirator use for wildland fires:

  • Requirements for Respirator Use
  • Voluntary Respirator Use
  • Current Respirator Options
  • Unknown Risks of Respirator Use

This bulletin also provides mitigation recommendations to help reduce smoke exposure for wildland firefighting efforts.
